 The Tasmanian Upper House voted overwhelmingly in favour of sending the bill to a standing committee. This will ensure the bill gets further scrutinised before being voted on or amended later in the year.

Despite all Liberal MPs voting against Health Minister Michelle O'Byrne's abortion bill, it passed the lower house by a vote of 13-11. Attention now turns to the upper house.

Health Minister Michelle O’Byrne has tabled an amended Reproductive Health (Access to Terminations) Bill that lowers the age of unfettered abortion from 24 down to 16 weeks. However, the heart of the bill has not changed, equating abortion with any other medical procedure by removing it from the Criminal Code. Doctors will now not be fined but will still be compelled to refer a woman to an abortion provider.

A NZ study has found: "There is no available evidence to suggest that abortion has therapeutic effects in reducing the mental health risks of unwanted or unintended pregnancy. There is suggestive evidence that abortion may be associated with small to moderate increases in risks of some mental health problems."
