:: Wanted: Mum AND Dad
::  what's all the fuss about? | the issues in brief

The Queensland Government wants to allow same sex couples and singles to acquire babies through surrogacy, deliberately denying these children the right to a mother AND a father.

The Government also wants to falsify the birth certificates of children born through artificial reproductive procedures to a woman in a lesbian relationship, denying the very existence of a father.

The Bligh Government has now introduced into parliament its Surrogacy Bill 2009, which would facilitate these radical social changes. The Bill will be debated early in 2010.

Action: Scroll down to email your local member of Parliament urging them not to support this.

"[M]y government’s ultimate aim is to ensure that all people who want to be parents have the opportunity to do so . . ."
"[E]ach and every Queenslander who wants to become a parent should be allowed the opportunity to do so . . . [A]nyone who . . . wants to become a parent should know the joy of bringing a child into the world . . ."
– Qld Premier Anna Bligh (2009 House of Assembly Hansard, pp. 148 & 1593)

In this brave new world, where babies are brought into being through Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) to fulfil the desires of adults, surrogacy is the latest ‘infertility’ technique on offer, but it ignores the natural and biological order in favour of adult demands for children.

Altruistic surrogacy tramples upon the fundamental right, and the inherent desire, of a child to be loved and raised by his or her biological mum AND dad.

Whilst surrogacy for heterosexual couples is fraught with ethical complexities, allowing two men or two women to acquire babies deliberately denies the right of a child to a mother AND a father. Clearly this is something a Government acting in the best interests of the child should never do.

Kids find themselves without a mum or dad usually through tragedy or desertion. Whilst single parents do a great job, no one (including single parents) would argue that raising kids on one’s own is ideal. All children deserve the chance to at least start life with a mum AND dad. The proposed Queensland law robs children of the complementary love and care of a mother and a father and sentences children to fatherless or motherless homes.

We must stand up for the best interests of children and demand that children  not be deliberately robbed of the love and care of a mother and a father. Please scroll down to send an email to your local member of Parliament asking him or her to reject surrogacy laws that rob kids of mum AND dad.
