The mildly titled “Assisted Reproductive Treatment Bill 2008” obliterates family as we know it. The bill allows for birth certificates to record 2 men or 2 women as parents rather than a mother and father. No more requirement for a biological connection, just being “nominated” is enough to be a parent in this brave new world. Through artificial conception and surrogacy arrangements, single women, single men or lesbians and homosexuals in same-sex relationships would be allowed to become “parents” of children and raise them in arrangements that deliberately deny them the love of both a mother and a father. The interests of children are relegated far, far below those of adults who “commission” a child to be produced.
