Sadly, Federal Parliament voted to allow human cloning in December 2006. This was a close run thing - in effect, it passed by just one vote in the Senate. But we certainly did Make a Stand on the issue - over 30,000 pollie mails were fired off and large petitions were presented to the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The online petition has now closed but 18,977 signatores were tabled in the House of Representatives. Thank you to all those who made a stand!
The new law allow the creation of human embryos solely for research – living cloned human embryos which could, like Dolly the sheep, be born as a baby, but are destined only for destructive experimentation.
Despite an attempted amendment in the House of Representatives, the law will allow the use of immature eggs from aborted female fetuses to be fertilised with adult male sperm. In other words, making an aborted baby girl the ‘mother’ of an embryo which will then be destroyed in research! This is inhuman legislation based on misguided science.
