In a few days time the Victorian government’s same-sex adoption legislation will be voted on in parliament.
Sadly the government has the votes to get this bill through parliament.
But I want to talk to you about the details of the bill.
Because there is still a chance we can make this bad legislation a little bit better.
I want to talk to you about Clause 17.
Clause Seventeen is a nasty piece of legislation.
It amends the Equal Opportunity Act and is designed to force all adoption agencies in Victoria to facilitate adoptions for same-sex parents.
So what ClauseSeventeen does is strip away freedom of conscience for people working in the adoption sector.
This is a really big deal.
You see freedom of religion has two parts.
People need to be free to believe what they want to believe.
But they also need to be free to practice their beliefs.
So freedom of conscience is a fundamental human right.
Whereas same-sex adoption, is not a human right at all.
There are plenty of agencies working in the adoption sector who are happy to facilitate same-sex adoptions.
However the Catholic-run Catholicare has a serious issue with this legislation.
You and I can’t just stand by while the government strips the people working at CatholicCare of their fundamental human rights.
Now here’s the crucial thing.
While the government has the numbers to get its bill through, there is a significant number of MPs who support same-sex adoption but who have a real problem with Clause 17.
We are very close to being able to have Clause 17 removed from the legislation.
But we will only be able to get Clause 17 out of the bill if enough people write to their members of the Legislative Council and ask them to vote to remove the section.
So please act today.
We only have a few days left before parliament votes on this bill and Clause Seventeen.
Please email your MLCs and ask them to vote against Clause 17 of the government’s same-sex adoption bill.
Thank you and God bless.
